How to increase salary by 2 or more times?

Pay raise and how to talk to an employer about it

Wrote a post about asking for a pay raise. Let's write this time my experience (which I repeated several times) how to increase it by 2 times.

There is a script. You are a good worker and you yourself feel it, you asked for an increase in salary, but they somehow increase it, but by the standard 5-10%. It seems nice, but, on the other hand, you already understand that this is not enough. Over time, you have increased responsibilities, you do more work and, most importantly, with high quality. A sense of injustice and discontent creeps in in some way.

It is important to understand that a salary is, in a sense, your price. The price that other participants in the market will be willing to pay. You can be super-efficient, cool, hard-working, but, unfortunately, this is only in your head. Others do not know anything about you, and they look at you in a completely different way. Hence the following conclusion. You need to make it clear that you are worth something and make it both easy and hard at the same time.

Easy, because you just have to start looking for another job or another employer. It’s hard, because this process is long and consists of a lot of nuances, where a mistake can cost you even today’s work, but it is 100% effective and, if successful, you can expect not only an increase in salary, but, possibly, a new job.

It's easy to start. Just start looking for a new job. And quite purposefully. Prepare your CV, tidy up linkedin and most importantly talk to people. Do non-standard job searches, for example sometimes even sending requests to companies where there are no vacancies at the moment, but you definitely would like to be with them. This process is long and should be approached as responsibly as possible.

Other companies often like such things. After all, in this case, they themselves get a good specialist. A kind of "select" the best who are already worth something on the market, and do not choose from those who suddenly found themselves "out" of work.

It's up to you to show another potential employer your main reasons. Sometimes you can play open cards and say that the salary is the main reason, or, for example, that you "stayed too long" in one place and just want a change of scenery.

These are perfectly valid reasons. The outcome of your search will be a proposal. Usually with a salary 2 times or higher than what you have today. Why is this happening? Yes, the fact is that in companies, even in the same position, the same employees receive different salaries. The reason is that they joined at different times. Paradoxically, an experienced employee with 5 or more years of experience can receive much less than a new employee who took over literally 1 month ago. It's unfair - you say, and I completely agree with you, but this is how our market works. Companies are inert, markets dictate their own rules. New organizations and competition are forcing companies to quickly update salary levels so as not to stop hiring workers, otherwise the company will lose heavily from this. And for existing employees, there are already approved budgets that are hard to change for everyone at once, and this is normal.

So, you have an offer in hand, but you should not rush. I do not advise you to accept it immediately. Tell your employer as loyally as possible that another organization offered me such and such a salary. You will be surprised if an existing employer can upgrade to the same salary or even offer more, as they will have a real fear of losing you.

This is how it works and has happened to me several times. Of course, doing this is also dangerous to some extent, because it allegedly shows your disloyalty to your existing employer, but even if it is regarded in this way, then a new place with a new offer is already waiting for you. The only thing to keep in mind is that you only have a price when others are willing to pay for you. From this follows my rule, you can be unhappy with the salary when other companies are ready to offer you something more.

If no one offers, well, it means, “dear-dear”, you are still “satisfied-satisfied” with your salary. And I advise you to definitely read 2 other posts on a similar topic.
