A test that lasted 10 years. Is it profitable to invest in coins?

In the good old 2013s, an interesting idea came to my mind, I decided to buy a few coins that were then offered by banks. At that time, I was still surprised that the coins sold, which were commemorative and issued on a specific occasion, were much larger than the usual and non-standard size. Beautifully designed, in a box, in a capsule and with a certificate of authenticity.

The cost of one was 35 euros. At that time, it’s not to say that there was a lot of money, but for a working student, this is quite the amount that could be eaten for several days.

Why buy coins?

I cannot give a definite answer. I did not take it for the sake of investment, although such thoughts were on my mind that I would leave it for a long time and maybe there will be much less of such quality and safety of coins. It was interesting to leave for a longer period and keep an eye on the cost, as well as to do some experiment. Will the price of them rise and will it be a successful trade? Of course, one cannot deny the aesthetic component of these coins, which even pleases the eye if they are on the shelf.

Raimond Valgre muusikale pühendatud meenumünt

Now it is difficult to say which coin was the first. There were 3 in my arsenal. I began to buy them in the period from May 2013 to December 2013. I kept them well and even had purchase receipts, but, unfortunately, I lost them. But I was lucky to make an extract and find payment for the Raimond Valgre coin, worth 35 euros. A total of 7500 coins were issued.

I didn't pay much attention to them until today. I realized that almost 10 years have passed and it's probably time to see how "profitable business" it is.

Profitability of commemorative coins

And that's where I got my biggest disappointment. Sophisticatedly using Google, I looked at the history of closed auctions and literally a year ago the same coin was sold for 38,10 euros. I attach the screenshot in the best traditions.

My coin value surfing

You have to admit that this is a fiasco. 8% in almost 10 years? These coins are clearly no more, and even more so in such a pure form, along with purchase certificates and checks, and if we divide by 10, we get an annual yield of 0,8% per year. We have almost 2022% inflation in 25!

And another series of coins

As you can imagine, the situation with other coins is not much different. The yield varied slightly and other coins were higher, reaching even 20%! But it's still a pretty funny picture, given the number of years they've been on hand.

My entire collection in the palm of your hand

Of course, you can increase profitability by selling through other platforms. For example, to America or to other countries for numismatists. It is probably especially valuable to receive coins with a serial number of 1 or 100 and so on. Their value is likely to be multiplied many times over.

While writing the article, I went to the action and began to fight for the Vatican coin of 2007 and managed to win it. It seems that these are sold on ebay for 80 euros, I managed to snatch for 40 :). But I will receive exclusively aesthetic pleasure, keeping these coins for many years with me!
